EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
