The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
