Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
